Also known as 21, Blackjack is one of the most popular games, if not the most popular game when it comes to gambling. No one really knows when the game was invented, but it seems to have appeared in literature, namely the short story, Rinconete y Special Events AtlantaCortadillo, by Miguel de Cervantes, famous for Don Quixote. In the story a gambler plays the game, or, at the very least a game similar to 21. The story was written between 1601 and 1602. However, no one knows when it was introduced to America.

When it was introduced, gambling houses that ran the game offered to bonus to players to entice them to play. A ten-to-one payout if theplayer held an ace of spades and a black jack. This black jack could either be a jack of clubs or a jack of spades. The name blackjack stuck after that, but the bonus did not. Now a winning hand can consist of an ace and any ten or face card, no matter the color or suit.

Blackjack is played with between one and eight decks of 52 cards. The more cards, the better the odds for the dealer to win. Your strategy? Beat the dealer! Of course, the house wants to win, just like you.

You can win Blackjack several ways:

  • Reach 21 with your first two cards (Blackjack!), but without a dealer blackjack
  • Reach the highest score, higher than the dealer, without going over 21
  • The dealer draws until he or she busts (goes over 21)

The player is dealt two cards at first (there can be other players, all playing against the house, or dealer), and adds the value of georgia casino nightthem together:

Face cards: king, queen, jack, all three = 10
Ace = 1 or 11; dealer and player decide which for their own card
All others cards are counted by their numeric value: 2=2, 7=7, etc.

After being dealt the first two cards, the player decides whether they will take a “hit” (another card), “stand” (their turn is over), “double” (double the bet, take one card from dealer and finish), “split” (if both cards have same value, turn it into two hands), or “surrender” (give up half of the bet and quit the game). The dealer never doubles, splits, or surrenders.

Simply put, you want to get as close to 21 without going over before the dealer does. Now, sometimes you will get to 21 in those first two cards, sometimes you won’t. Sometimes you will get close and sometimes you will go over. The dealer will hit until his or her cards hit 17 or higher.

Blackjack Strategies

There are different strategies you can use to (hopefully) win at Blackjack.

Stand: If your hand is above 12 and the dealer holds a 4, 5, or 6, you should stand. When the dealer has these hands, his chances are high that he will bust.

Hit: If your hand is below 17 and the dealer holds an ace, king, queen, 10, 9, or 8, take a hit. The dealer’s chances of busting aregeorgia casino party slim and, unless you clear 16, your chances of winning are slim.

Double Down: Player can double their bet, yet has to stand after receiving one more card from the dealer. For example, if you are holding a 10 or an Ace, it’s a good idea to double down, because no matter what the dealer puts out there for your next card, you can’t lose, unless, of course the dealer hits 21, or at least higher than you stand on.

Split (can only be the first decision of a hand): when the first two cards are the same value, the player can split the hand into two, and has to place the same bet on both. The dealer treats this as two plays with a card drawn on each, and both hands are played out.

  • Never split 10s and 5s.
  • Always split Aces and 8′s. 8′s doubled equals 16, which is close to 17. Your only way of beating the dealer is if the dealer busts. You have a better chance of hitting higher than 16 without busting are good.
  • Split 2s and 3s when the dealer has 4s, 5s, and 6s.
  • 4s, 5s, 6s, and 7s; only split these when the dealer has hand shows less than these.

Insurance: If the dealer’s first card on a new game is an ace, there is a chance that the next card could be a face card, or a 10, which would make it blackjack. The player can make an insurance bid, which is a side bet that has nothing to do with the original bid on the cards, and pays 2:1. The player can bid up to half the value of the original bet. Supposedly this covers any losses, at least to a certain point, if the dealer hits 21. Not recommended by most experienced Blackjack players.

Now that you’ve learned how to play Blackjack – time to go play…
